Often in real estate, we run into homes that we think are almost perfect for clients but would need some updates. To expand our vision, it is best to bring a professional. We thought it would be helpful to hear tips from award-winning local architect Tom Parker on when and why to consult with an architect before purchasing a home. Parker Design Group | Architects [PDG] is an award-winning architecture design firm, serving both residential and commercial clients throughout the Southeast. Founder Tom Parker has been practicing architecture in Hilton Head Island and the surrounding area for over 30 years.

Q: When Homebuyers Are Working With a Lowcountry Real Estate Agent to Buy a Lot or Even an Older Home in Need of Renovation, When is It Best to Get You Involved?

Parker: Hiring a local consulting architect to look at a piece of land or an existing home before purchasing is always a good idea.

An architect is a design professional who has the education, training, experience, and vision to listen to what your needs are and then point out the pros and cons of the particular property you are looking at. Often, they will identify specific assets or design opportunities through their local knowledge of codes, zoning, Kirkland Movers & architectural styles that can add value to purchase for you.

Q: Why Do You Think It is Critical to Get an Architect Involved?

Parker: Most building projects start with a want or need, for example, "I need more file space in my office," or "We've outgrown our house." How does that need or want to get translated into square feet and three-dimensional space? This is the best time to get a local architect involved.

An architect is trained to “solve problems in creative ways.” With their broad knowledge of design and inclign construction, architects can show you alternatives and options you and your contractor may never think of on your own.
